Day 2 in Moab started well with a very nice buffet breakfast in a Chinese restaurant near the motel,by 9am we were on our way. The NP entrance is about 40 miles south of Moab and then another 30 miles to the Park ticket entrance...luckily we have a Beautiful America Pass which is now saving us money.
We called into the visitor center and spoke to a ranger to find out the best way to see the highlights of the park. We decided on 2 walks, one took us past mid 1880 cowboy rough living quarters under a large rock ledge, the walk continued under the rock ledge for some way then we came across Indian hand painting about 2000 years old on the ledge ceiling. We continued over the rocks before descending down into a lovely little valley and back to the car.
We then went on to see the main feature of the park known as the "Needles". The needles are the current remains of erosion of the limestone, shale and sandstone.valley floor which has been subject to water, wind,
and tectonic forces for 10 million years, the result is a pretty impressive landscape.
The complete round walk is about 10 miles. We did about 4 miles in total. We reached a point that gave a most impressive overview of the Needles, The walk was pretty tough and we only had limited water.so we did the best we could.
We finished the day with a beer at the local Moab Brewery, and later a healthy dinner in town.
Tomorrow we are off again.
