We left Mesa Verde at 9am after deciding that we had seen the very best of the ruins.
We had been told about a few things we " shouldn't miss " in New Mexico, so Sandie set our course for Santa Fe, but of course doing it the long way via a loop called the "enchanted circle"
On entering NM from the west we entered the Indian Reservation areas home of the Apache.
It was a complete contrast to what had gone before..we were in a very poor part of the state ( or was it all like this...yet to be discovered)
Housing was fairly basic, and mostly un-kept, small towns and even larger ones had their fair share, of street and highway rubbish and gardens un - loved.
Hwy 64 had hundreds of small to medium, oil of natural gas plants, along both sides of the Hwy for many miles.
Tonight we are in a town called "CHAMA" , about 1000 residence, spread out and a bit run down.
The town would appear to be most famous for its narrow gauge steam tourist train called the "Cumbres & Toltec",, for yet another trip into the Rocky Mountains, mind you tonight we are at 6500 feet above sea level. The days are still hot but the nights are cooling off
Tonight we are in a motel that's not quite up to the usual standard that we have enjoyed.
Tomorrow it's into the start of the "enchanted Circle" :
